THE PROBLEM CITY
Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and the largest
metropolitan area in Southeast Asia with tremendous population growth and a
wide range of urban problems. The overall population of the megacity of Jakarta
grew in the 20th Century, from about 150,000 in 1900 to about 28 million in
2010. The megacity of Jakarta is also called Jabodetabek, taken from the
initial letters of the administrative units of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang
and Bekasi.
Floods have become a threat and bring increasing woes for
Jakarta residents every year, the severity of flooding in Jakarta is due to the
location of Jakarta; located in a lowland area with 43 lakes and 13 rivers.
Meanwhile, the peripheries of Jakarta are located in higher areas. The
tributaries and basin areas of all rivers in Jakarta are in the peripheries of
Jakarta. Thus, Jakarta’s flooding is strongly related with the sustainability
of the Jakarta’s peripheries.
i think normalisation river in Pesanggrahan, Angke and Sunter
in North Jakarta, build infiltration wells in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok and
Tangerang, install sump pumps to prevent accumulation of water in North
Jakarta, reducing the use of groundwater and protecting water catchment areas
will also decelerate land subsidence and increase the sustainability of
Jakarta.
